Mieterm

A native SSH client and terminal for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Mieterm is an SSH client and terminal, an open-source alternative to Termius.

I built it with saved servers, tabs, split panes, command broadcast, port forwarding, SFTP and session recording. Passwords and passphrases stay in the system keychain, and nothing is sent anywhere. The app is about 12 MB.

Built with Tauri, Rust, and React.

What it does

  • Saved servers with a label, host, port, user, colour, tags and notes. Log in with your SSH agent and default keys, a key file with an optional passphrase, or a password.
  • Passwords and passphrases go in the macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager or the Linux Secret Service. hosts.json never holds a secret.
  • A real pty per tab, so vim, htop, less and tmux behave as they do in a terminal. Up to four split panes per tab, and broadcast to type once into all of them.
  • Snippets, a command palette on ⌘K, a tunnel manager for -L, -R and -D forwards, and an SFTP file browser.
  • Session recording to disk, with search across every recording.
  • Eight themes, a configurable font, and signed in-app updates that are never installed without your say.

Install

Download the build for your system from the latest release: a .dmg for macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), an .exe installer for Windows, and an .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for Linux.

Mieterm runs the ssh already on your machine. macOS and Linux always have one. Windows has shipped OpenSSH since Windows 10; if it is missing, add it under Settings, Apps, Optional Features, OpenSSH Client.

Because it uses OpenSSH, your ~/.ssh/config, ssh-agent, hardware keys, jump hosts and known_hosts all apply unchanged. The file browser is the exception: it makes its own SFTP connection and cannot read ~/.ssh/config, so name the key on the server row if a host depends on a config-file identity.

Good to know

  • On Windows, ssh.exe ignores SSH_ASKPASS, so a saved password cannot be filled in. You type it in the terminal, or use a key.
  • Certificate authentication works in the terminal but not in the file browser.
  • Your data lives in ~/Library/Application Support/Mieterm on macOS, %APPDATA%\Mieterm on Windows and ~/.local/share/Mieterm on Linux. Nothing is sent anywhere except to the servers you connect to.

Build from source

You need Node 20 or newer and a stable Rust toolchain. On Linux you also need the WebKitGTK development headers, listed in CONTRIBUTING.md in the repository.

git clone https://github.com/mdenizay/mieterm.git
cd mieterm
npm install
npm run app:dev
npm run app:build

app:dev runs it, and app:build produces an installer for the current platform.
